Redland High School and The Red Maids’ School are two of the finest girls’ day schools in the South West. The Red Maids’ School is the oldest surviving girls’ school in the country and was founded in 1634 by John Whitson, Lord Mayor and MP for Bristol. Redland High School has been providing an exceptional education for girls since 1882.
Each school’s heritage is hugely important to our girls past and present. Yet in our discussions together over the past few months we have come to appreciate how much our two schools have in common. We share a belief in all-girls’ education, excellence in academic results, achievement in the creative and performing arts, success in sports and extra-curricular activities, supported by outstanding pastoral care.
Few schools have the opportunity to create a new future. With this proposed merger as Redmaids’ High School we will become a bigger, stronger and ultimately more sustainable school with first-class facilities for the girls of Bristol and beyond.
From September 2017 Redmaids’ High School will operate from the current Red Maids’ School site at Westbury-on-Trym. From September 2016 to July 2017 teaching will continue at the current sites for most year groups with various joint activities to help bond the two student and staff bodies.
I will be the Headmistress of Redmaids’ High School, Mrs Lisa Brown will be Headteacher of Redmaids’ High Junior School. The Chairman of Governors will be Mrs Jane MacFarlane, supported by a governing body comprising governors from both schools. The Honorary President of the new school will be Mrs Carol Lear, currently President of Redland. She is a former Headmistress of Redland from 1989 to 2002 and prior to that taught Classics at The Red Maids’ School.
Together as Redmaids’ High School we will educate academically able girls with high aspirations to achieve their full potential. They will become confident young women who will challenge conventional wisdom and light up tomorrow’s world.
